WORLD TOP 5 MOST ENDANGERED ANIMALS
Global warming, deforestation,
encroaching civilization and illegal hunting’s have threatened the very existence
of some species of animals. Below are the top five (5) most endangered species
of animals on our planet.
1. VAQUITA
Vaquita is currently the world
most endangered animal with their current population said to be only less than forty
(40). The name vaquita is said to have originated from Spain. This rare specie of
animals lives on the gulf of Carolina an adult vaquita can grow up to 5ft long
and weigh up to 97lbs.
This fish is a specie of porpoise,
they can be found 15-50m deep in the waters at the gulf of California. However
due to their small number, spotting them would be extremely difficult.
2. AMUR LEOPARD
Amur leopard is the next on the
list, this endangered leopard has gone
extint in most countries, they differ from other subspecies by a thick coat of
spot-covered fur. They are well adapted
to walking through deep snow.
It is estimated that the population of amur
leopard in existence today would be in the region of 56-65.
3. JAVAN RHINOCEROS
This is the world’s most
endangered rhino specie, they are a member of the family “Rhinocerotidae” with only one known population in the wild,
and no individuals in captivity. An average Javan Rhinoceros can live 30–45 years
in the wild
4. NOTHERN SPORTIVE LEMUR
Also known as Sahafary sportive
lemur or northern weasel lemur, is a species of lemur in the family
Lepilemuridae. There are around 100 species of these primates, all of which
live on the Island of Madagascar, off the southeast coast of Africa.
Northern sportive lemur forage
for food at night and sleeping in the day. The lemurs sleep in holes or dense
foliage in trees ranging from 1 to 8 metres.
Northern sportive lemurs
(Lepilemur septentrionalis) are one of the smallest of the Lepilemurs and have
pale grey-brown backs with a darker line that runs from the head down to the
tail.
5. WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA
Western Lowland Gorillas are one of two
subspecies of the western gorilla (Gorilla gorilla) that
lives in montane, primary
and secondary forests and lowland swamps in central
Africa in Angola,
Cameroon,
Central African Republic, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo,
Equatorial Guinea and Gabon. It is the nominate subspecies of the western gorilla.
It is the only gorilla
kept in zoos with the exception of Amahoro, a female Eastern lowland gorilla at Antwerp Zoo
and a few Mountain gorillas kept captive in Democratic Republic of the Congo
